Pochutla is a warm place that has a beach weather feel, however this town is one that is more focused on being a hub and port for ocean transportation. The population here is 68,000 people. The reason a lot of travelers choose to come here is because they can exchange currency, cash travelers checks, and load up on other items they may need while traveling the beach towns. The city has a lot of traffic dust, taxis and many buses.
If you would like to get to Puerto Escondido from Pochutla you can do so by taking a collectivo that will cost you 55 pesos. If you would like you can also take a collectivo to Puerto Angel for 11 pesos and Zipolite for 22 pesos. If you wish to go farther than any of these three areas you can negotiate a price at the bottom of the hill near the bus station. If you want to travel between many beach towns your best bet is to use a camioneta. The camionetas leave Pochutla every 1/2 hour or so and cost around 22 pesos. The camionetas operate from 6:30am-8:30 pm and they only charge 8 pesos to get to Puerto Angel, 11 pesos to Zipolite or Mazunte. If you would like to take a trip via bus you will find that the second class buses are located at the bus station off of Cardenas. This bus line goes to Oaxaca in 7-1/2 hours and costs 75 pesos, and Mexico City in 11 hours and costs 360 pesos. The other bus line called Transitos Rapidos de Pochutla is another bus station that is located just beyond the 2nd class station. This bus line goes to Bahia de Huatalco in less than an hour and charges 20 pesos. The Eclipse 70 bus goes to Oaxaca for 125 pesos.
If you decide to stay the night in Pochutla you will find yourself quite comfortable at the Santa Cruz Hotel which is located near the Cristobol Colon bus station. The rooms here are clean and spacious and make a suitable stay if you are just staying the night on a layover to another destination. The prices here for a single occupancy are 105 pesos, and if you would like a private bath the cost is 125 pesos. The double occupancy rooms are 160 pesos. They only accept cash as payment. If you would like more luxurious accommodations you would be much happier at the Izalo Hotel which is located on Cardenas after you pass Juarez. The rooms here are quite big and feature private bathrooms, air conditioning, and a very clean atmosphere. The rooms here cost between 160- 260 pesos per night for a single just depends if you need AC and a private bathroom. The prices for a double occupancy room are between 360-510 pesos per night just depends on the amenities you will require. If you are hungry while in Pochutla you will find the Lichita Restaurant that is located off of Cardenas to have very fast service with big portions of food. The price for corrida here is 36 pesos. They are open every day from 9:30am-8:30 pm. They only accept cash as payment.
If you would like to get to the zocalo area where there is a beautiful church and huge market you will need to walk down Cardenas until you see Juarez where you should then turn right and walk another block to the taxi area. In this area you will be able to find a Banamex bank where you can cash in travelers checks, exchange currency and also use their 24 hour ATM. The bank is across the street from the Municipal Agency. You will also find a Scotiabank that offers the same services within the same area. If you have a need for the police while you are in Pochutla you will find they are located in the Municipal Palace which is next to the big church. If you need to fill a prescription or buy some over the counter medications you can do so at the pharmacy before Juarez street called Farmacias de Mas Ahorro. This pharmacy is open 24 hours a day. If you have a medical emergency you can visit the hospital that is in between Puerto Angel and Pochutla and it is called SSA. If you need internet service while you are in Pochutla you will be happy to find an internet cafe called Ciberespacio which is located right by the big church and they will charge 11 pesos per hour of service and they are open Mon-Sat 9:30am-9:30 pm. If you need to mail a postcard or letter while you are in Pochutla you can do so at the post office located on Juarez road and they are open Mon-Fri 8am-3pm and the zip code in Pochutla is 70900.
