Costa Grande
Costa Grande is what many call the coast on the North side of Acapulco. The smaller coast of Acapulco is called Costa Chica and this area is in the South. You will not find many beaches along the coast of Acapulco to be as inviting as Barra de Potosi. This beach is located 10 miles from Zihuatanejo. This is a wonderful place to explore the beautiful beach and hear the soothing wave’s crash.
Barra de Potosi
If you are burnt out of over populated tourist destinations you will find a lot of pleasure in Barra de Potosi. This beach feels like it could go on forever and that would be a wonderful thing if it did. In Barra de Potosi you will be able to visit a very shallow and beautiful lagoon as well as a palm tree forests, and palapa huts located right along the water. This area has escaped the hungry eyes of developers and remains to be a sleepy and relaxing little beach town. You may want to know that nothing exists here except that of the beautiful beach. The only things you will need are sunscreen and a towel. If you swim by the rocks you will notice the waves to be a lot rougher there and provides a decent beginner surfer area. Barra de Potosi is a wonderful escape from the business of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo and people like to travel here from all over just to experience the relaxing serenity that prevails here. The hotels are super expensive so if you are on a budget you would be better suited to stay at a hotel in Zihuatanejo.
If you would like to get to the Costa Grande from Zihuatanejo you have the option of many available buses that head to Potosi at the bus station located on Las Palmas. The buses have availability every 1/2 hour or so and operate from 6:30am-9:30 pm and cost 15 pesos. You may also get on a bus off Los Cocos. If you take the Los Cocos bus you will need to tell the driver to let you exit at Achotes which you will be able to see because it has a white and black sign. From that point you can take a truck that has benches of wood in the bed to take you to all the beachside restaurants called enramadas. The trucks will take you back and forth from 7am-6pm and will charge you only 11 pesos. If you want to get back to Zihuatanejo you will need to be dropped off by the pick up on the other side of the road.
