If you are traveling with a group of people you will probably get the most luxury for your money by staying at the Nuevo Hotel Alameda de Uruapan which is located on 5 de Febrero and is pretty close to the zocalo. The food in Uruapan is varied from very inexpensive to higher scaled and fancy cafes. Most of the hot eateries are located within the zocalo. A couple of the local prized specialties are avocados, and also gourmet coffee. You can look to about any corner of town and see these two items sold on every one of them. If you are looking for more budget food options you should head to the street vendor food stands located within the Antojitos Mercado which is located on Carranza and Constitucion. These streets are on the northern part of the zocalo.  You will feel a lot of vibrant energy and you can hear the meat sizzling at just about every stand. There are many children playing and screaming and it is quite a busy atmosphere. The vendors will try to entice you by yelling out what they have to offer to get you to come to their food stands. If you are an adventurous eater you will definitely want to try the Atole de leche and that is a cornstarch drink that is warmed and frothy and absolutely delicious. This drink can be bought for around 5 pesos. The Mercado is open every day from 8am-12 midnight and they only accept cash here. If you are in desire of a more high class atmosphere you will find yourself very pleased at the Cafe La Pergola located on Portal Carrillo which is on the southern part of the zocalo. here the waiters are dressed very professionally in suits and slacks, and the lighting is very dim and the atmosphere very inviting. Some of their favorites on the menu are Uruapan enchiladas which cost 60 pesos and drinks made out of avocados go for 32 pesos. They are open every day from 8:30am-11:30 pm and they only accept cash as payment. A favorite place among the locals is that of La Lucha located on Portal Matamoros.
